DJ Dan was born in Cleveland (where the phrase "Rock and Roll" is said to have been coined by DJ Alan Freed) in 1957. Also that year:
Barry Gordy invested $700 to found Motown
Among the guests on the Ed Sullivan Show were Elvis,
Buddy Holly, the Everley Brothers, & George Carlin
American Bandstand went national
Eveready produced the first AA alkaline batteries for
use in "personal transistor radios"
The US had 2,974 AM radio stations and only 530 FM radio stations.
DJ Dan started out early in life (1962, age 5) with a GE Show N Tell
Player, a sort of a hybrid audio/video player for kids which could play a record and display a
filmstrip at the same time.
At the age of 9 (1966), he sneaked into his brother's 16th birthday party, sitting on the basement steps and listening to the music of the Monkees, the Beach Boys, and others. AM radio was going strong, and even in Cleveland, DJ Dan was listening to the latest Motown and Rock & Roll hits on AM CKLW "The Big 8", just across the river from Detroit.
And the music equipment kept on coming:
1971 - RCA portable 3.5" Reel to Reel recorder/player
1972 - Panasonic AM/FM transistor radio (he still has it)
1972 - Realistic (later Tandy; you may know them as Radio Shack) 8 Track Player
1978 - Sony 11.5" Reel to Reel Tape Deck
Do you remember these radio stations?
70's radio: Cleveland's WMMS "Home of the Buzzard"
early 80's radio: Houston's KLOL "The Legend"
mid 80's radio: Orlando, FL WDIZ Rock 100
In 1986, after 2 years of working as a DJ for other companies, DJ Dan started Good Vibrations Entertainment and has moved from vinyl to CD's to Minidiscs to MP3's. And the rest, as they say, is history ...
